Infections or inflammations of the salivary glands can be of viral or bacterial origin. They present as an increase in the size and volume of the gland. The salivary glands (parotid or submandibular) may then become painful. Treatment is most often medical, combining hydration, antibiotics, and/or corticosteroids.
